Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a platelet disorder that means blood doesn’t clot properly due to low platelets, causing bleeds that are difficult to stop. The condition isn’t severe in most people and often resolves without treatment, but medications or transfusions can increase your platelet count. Removing the spleen may address the immune cause of ITP.
