EveryPlate was created by its parent company, HelloFresh, to suit tighter food budgets. It offers easy-to-prepare meal kits that can be made in 30 minutes or less. You can order meals for two, four, or six people, making it fitting for singles, couples, and families.
“EveryPlate is the best budget-friendly meal delivery service because of its low price point and frequent coupons and deals,” says Alexandria Hardy, RDN, of Pennsylvania Nutrition Services in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. “A family faves box that feeds four people and provides five meals per week clocks in at less than $120 per week or $5.99 per serving. It also offers student discounts and partners with corporate organizations to provide meal delivery at a lower cost than other meal kits.”
I appreciate EveryPlate's flexibility with meal choices; you can increase protein and veggie servings or swap sides and proteins. When my clients are able to personalize and vary their meal ingredients more often, this can help promote a more sustainable way of eating. To keep costs low, EveryPlate doesn’t cater to specific diets like keto, paleo, or vegan. So EveryPlate would be best for someone with no particular dietary needs who is simply looking for lower-calorie options to lose weight. “Its focus is on simple, high-quality ingredients, and it is mindful of packaging for a sustainable and less expensive end product,” adds Hardy.
Like HelloFresh, you can’t easily sort for specific meals unless you sign up for that particular plan first. You can still find that information and view the options on the main screen, but you have to spend a bit more time searching for, say, the calorie-smart label amid a long list of meals. If you have any food allergies, you must be extra diligent in reviewing each meal’s ingredient list, as the website does not label allergens on the main pages.

The Everyday Health team tested over 20 meal delivery services to find the best ones for weight loss. Some of those we considered ultimately didn’t make the cut. Here are the ones that were close but not among our top picks.
Fuel Meals is a prepared meal delivery service with macro-balanced meals for active adults. It offers high-protein breakfasts, lunches, dinners, protein add-ons, and snacks that cater to athletes and fitness enthusiasts. We liked that all of the meals were high in protein and had low-carb and gluten-free choices. While many meals were balanced and lower in calories, the taste and quality didn’t deliver. Most of the meals lacked flavor, had a metallic taste, and were soggy after being heated in a microwave. Nutrisystem delivers prepared, calorie-portioned meals to your door. We appreciated the convenient packaging and the coaching and motivational tools available. However, our taste testers didn’t like many of the meals, saying they were bland and tasted artificial. Certain items, like a chicken patty, had an unappealing texture. The portions are also very small, which many may find unsatisfying. These factors can make it difficult to stick with the service long term to support weight loss. Diet-to-Go is a prepared meal delivery service that specializes in dietitian-designed, portion-controlled meals. While the meals are low in calories to support short-term weight loss, we didn’t make this service one of our top picks because of some negative reviews. Users reported a large amount of packaging associated with their deliveries, which can be time-consuming and wasteful. Many customers also complained about bland food, in particular vegetables that were mushy and lacked flavor. If the food isn’t appealing, it won’t be a sustainable plan. Meals are also pretty pricey, considering they don’t contain any meat. And since Thistle ships to a limited number of areas, it’s not accessible to many people. Sakara is a plant-based meal delivery service, but it didn’t make our list for the best weight loss options because it focuses more on nourishment than calories, and it doesn’t list the exact calorie amount in its meals. We liked the flavors, ingredient variety, and fiber-rich meals to support gut health and weight loss. The meals adhere to Sakara's nutrition pillars, which estimate that a day’s worth of its meals is about 1,600 to 2,000 calories.
While we appreciate the focus on nourishment, many people trying to lose weight want to know the calorie breakdown of their food. While calories aren’t everything, they do matter when it comes to weight loss, and this lack of transparency makes it hard to recommend Sakara as a weight loss service. As a registered dietitian and weight loss expert with over 18 years of experience, I screened for the best weight loss meal delivery service with a critical eye, evaluating each plan's overall characteristics to support weight loss and my experience trying them and recommending them to clients. I also consulted with 13 nutrition experts for their insights. When narrowing down our choices, we additionally tapped into the expertise of the Everyday Health editorial team and factored in their recommendations for the final decision:
What to Look for When Signing Up for Weight Loss Meal Delivery
When seeking the best weight loss meal delivery for your needs, there are a few important factors to consider.
Balanced Nutrition When signing up for meal delivery services, look for nutritionally balanced meals that adequately balance the three macronutrients, or macros: protein, carbohydrates, and fats. “Ideally, a meal will have a good mix of carbs, protein, and fat to help keep you satisfied and provide lasting energy. High-protein meals can be particularly helpful for weight management because they promote satiety and help keep your muscles strong,” says Glinski.

To determine if a meal fits the bill, check to see if it contains a protein, carb (brown rice, bread, starchy veggies like potato, fruit), and healthy fat source.
Glinski looks for meals with a lot of vegetables or legumes; since these foods contain a lot of fiber, they can keep you full without overdoing it on calories.
Ingredient Quality When choosing a meal delivery service, it’s essential to consider the quality of the ingredients and if the service meets your personal health and ethical standards. Look for services that offer sustainably sourced meats with responsible farming practices and organic produce if this is important to you. If you have a food allergy, check the ingredient labels on menu items to ensure that they’re safe for you to eat, and consider if it is easy to filter by allergen during meal selection. If your allergy is severe, you’ll also want to confirm that the manufacturing process doesn't pose a risk of cross contamination.
Calorie Content If your goal is to lose weight, the calorie level of your meals matters. Many meal delivery services offer nutritious meals, but the calorie count is too high for most people to promote weight loss. “I typically aim for meals with 650 calories or less for weight management. Many meal delivery meals are over 1,000 calories each, which can be hard to fit into a weight management plan,” says Glinski.
Preparation “When choosing which kit is best for you, it’s important to consider how much time you want to spend cooking. Just because you receive the ingredients, it doesn't mean they cook themselves, and some of the prep times could be more involved than you may realize,” says Taub-Dix. If you don’t like to cook or don’t have time to, you may want to choose a company that offers ready-made meals.
Budget Meal delivery services come with different price points, so make sure that the service fits your budget. “I truly look at cost per meal, and I know my clients do as well,” says Jessie Carpenter, RD, owner of Nutrition Prescription in Warner Robins, Georgia. Don’t forget to account for extra ingredients and meals you’ll still need to buy from the grocery store, as the total costs can add up.
Flexibility Certain meal delivery services cater to specific diets, so if you follow a particular way of eating or prefer the flexibility to swap ingredients, there are options out there. “Look for a meal plan that you can customize,” recommends Glinski. “For example, you can switch red meat, which can be quite fatty and has more calories, for ground chicken or ground turkey to reduce your overall calorie and fat intake.”
