Some people also don’t feel satisfied without chewing their food. Chewing helps your body process food better and contributes to feelings of fullness. “It’s easy to slurp down liquid calories in the form of a smoothie and not feel as satiated compared to having chewed a similar amount of solid food,” says House. Some of this comes from chewing, which naturally slows down eating and signals your brain that you’re getting full.

According to Bourgois, smoothies can be a healthy addition to a balanced diet, but they aren’t all created equal. “It's essential to be mindful of ingredients, as many are made with added sugars and high-fat components that may work against your health goals,” she explains. Look for smoothies with fiber, protein, and healthy fats.
“Nutritionally, yes, smoothies can replace meals,” says House. “If you have a balanced smoothie containing multiple food groups (such as whole grains like oats, protein such as dairy, legumes or nuts, and fruit and vegetables).” She adds that some people may not feel satisfied even with a balanced smoothie, so it’s always important to consider your personal needs.
