Rachel Fairbank is a freelance science writer who trained as a geneticist before switching to science writing. She received a bachelor's degree in biology, completed the coursework for a PhD in developmental biology, and got an MFA in creative writing. Her work has appeared in the Houston Chronicle, Texas Monthly, Washington Post, and Lifehacker.

When she is not writing, she is a distance runner, amateur boxer, and mother to a very active toddler.
